Fishback has certainly grown with the times. Launched in 1945 (long before hip-hop was a thing) this Northeast Heights studio teaches dance of all sorts including ballet jazz tap and yes hip-hop. The classes here are popular—thus the need for more than 30 dance faculty members. “We have students that love to dance recreationally and students that love to dance competitively” says Kathie Fishback Anthony who took over the studio from the founder her mother Katherine who passed in 2013. “I’m in this for the joy of the experience in the community. I’m not a real competitive person. So I like to join in this with everyone.” The term ‘everyone’ isn’t too far off as the studio has been host to more than 25000 ABQ students over the years. The studio also works with the University of New Mexico to help raise money for scholarships in the dance department.
