The accolades for this pillar of literature are too numerous to count (type his name into YouTube and watch as your fingers get tired from scrolling). The boy from Santa Rosa found the pinnacle of fame when his novel—Bless Me Ultima written in the 1960s while Anaya taught local high school English—became embedded in pop and Latino culture (the coming-of-age tale based on Anaya’s upbringing is universally considered the mostly widely read and critically acclaimed book in Chicano literature). Even today the 81-year-old (who lives on the Westside) is still productive—his latest book How Chile Came To New Mexico was published just this year.
